Influencing Policy Media

We are delighted to introduce Robyn Pattison as our new Policy and Parliamentary Officer for Forces Children Scotland.

Robyn will work directly with children and young people from armed forces and veteran families to co-produce impactful campaigns which aim to ensure their voice is heard in future policy-making.

Better still, Robyn will represent the charity on several parliamentary working groups and work directly with decision makers and strategic partners to ensure future policy and legislation meets the unique support needs of children and young people.

We grabbed a little time with Robyn to learn more about the knowledge, skills, and experiences she brings to the role.

What inspired you to apply for this role with Forces Children Scotland?

“I was inspired to apply because my father served in the Royal Navy which provides an understanding of some of the issues faced by children and young people the charity supports. Equally, I love the fact that there’s a massive focus on co-production which I think is excellent.

“This is the perfect position because of my passion for policy, my lived experience and it’s clear this group of children and young people are seldom-heard in general.”

What will you bring to the role in terms of knowledge, skills, and experience?

“I have worked closely with politicians, mostly researching policies on issues ranging from foreign policy to the benefits system. I have also assisted members of the public on enquires relating to benefits and immigration, always striving for positive outcomes on their behalf.

“On a personal note, witnessing my father’s transition to civilian life, and the challenges this posed for my family and how his time in the Royal Navy is still important to him twenty years later, places me in a great position when engaging decision makers.”

What are you looking forward to most regarding your new role?

“I am looking forward to working with my enthusiastic and knowledgeable colleagues. I am also excited to amplify the voice of the children and young people we support to decision makers and push for meaningful change. It is an exciting time in the Scottish policy landscape, and I am keen to make a difference.”
