Young people from across Forces families had a fun and productive summer residential last week in collaboration with Young Scot.
“The 2026 summer residential brought so many fantastic opportunities, from working closely with Young Scot, going to the cinema, eating at a buffet or exploring parts of Edinburgh in the sun. By far my favourite thing was partnering with Young Scot, learning about and creating content! Discussing topics such as: growing up in a Forces family, moving to Scotland and the opportunities Young Scot have for young people. I’m glad I attended the residential and left learning new skills and growing further connections with others!” – Erin

We asked Alfie what the best meal was, and he said: “Has to be Nandos, it was my first time eating there and I thought the food was absolutely banging!”
The resi wasn’t just fun and games, even though there were a lot of them (for example, the escape room, a trip to the cinema, a round of crazy golf).
By coming together, this group explored their identities and experiences with peers who understand them, and in turn, they channelled this shared understanding into resources to help other young people.
Workshops with Young Scot invited them to reflect on what it’s like growing up in a Forces family in Scotland through letters, drawings and more. Later, the group created multi-media content to help young people navigate similar experiences and moves while taking advantage of Young Scot’s opportunities, including the Young Scot National Entitlement Card.
The results will be an exciting new hub from Young Scot, designed by and for Forces young people – coming soon! Thanks to Erin and John at Young Scot for bringing fun and expertise to these workshops.
To round off the week, we were joined by Dr. Liam Satchel, Director of the Impact Centre at Service Children’s Progression (SCiP) Alliance, for a discussion on how young people’s views can be understood and acted on. Thanks for joining, Liam, and for taking part in the escape room too!
