The City of Edinburgh Council has marked a milestone in strengthening the rights of children from Armed Forces families across the capital by endorsing the Forces Children’s Rights Charter. Edinburgh becomes the ninth local authority to do so, meaning that over a third (37%) of Armed Forces children in Scotland now live in a local authority area that is committed to upholding the rights of Forces children.

The council’s Education, Children and Families Committee heard deputations from four local Forces children, from both primary and secondary schools, about their experiences of Forces life and why adopting the Charter would make a difference to their lives. Mya (16) and Louisa (16) both attend Firrhill High School, and McKinley (10) and Tilly (11) attend Colinton Primary School.

Louisa was part of the group of young people who helped shape the Charter. She told the committee:

“We needed the Charter because so often the experiences and rights of children and young people from Forces families are overlooked. We don’t get a say in decisions that affect our lives, but they have an impact on us and can affect our mental health.

“We’re also proud to be part of a Forces family, we want that to be recognised and we want to be able to celebrate our identity as a Forces child.”

Mya said:

“A lot of schools don’t understand the challenges that come from things like deployment and the lack of support when you move to different schools.

“Starting at a new location, at a new school, the charter can make a real difference to that. It also celebrates and protects our identity as Forces children.”

McKinley said:

“As a Forces child, I know that life can change, but every child should always feel that they belong, that they are listened to, and that their rights matter.”

Tilly said:

“I think it is important that people understand that every Forces child is different. People should not make assumptions about our needs because we are all unique. We should be listened to as individuals.”

The Forces Children’s Rights Charter is a rights-based framework founded on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It was created by Forces Children Scotland in partnership with children and young people from Armed Forces families, and sets out what children from military families believe they need in order to have their rights respected, protected and supported.
