Evaluating an impactful programme at Colinton Primary School

Ethel Mendius 3 weeks ago

We’re proud to share the impact of our recent learning sessions delivered to teachers at Colinton Primary School in Edinburgh!

From November 2024 to May 2025, we worked alongside dedicated practitioners to deepen their understanding of armed forces life and the unique experiences of Armed Forces babies, children and young people.

‘Very informative and delivered in an interesting and passionate way.’
– Feedback from a participant

We delivered this comprehensive training over four in-depth twilight sessions, covering four of our learning modules:

  • An Introduction to the armed forces and forces children
  • Children and young people from armed forces and veteran families and their rights
  • The mobile lives of children and young people from Armed Forces and veteran families
  • Understanding the child’s experience of separation and deployment from parents

Measuring Impact

We asked participants to rate their knowledge about the lived experience of armed forces children before and after taking part in the programme.

Coming in, 100% of participants rated their knowledge as 1-3 (no knowledge to some knowledge). There was a total transformation following the sessions, with 100% of participants rating their knowledge as 4-5 (lots of knowledge to expert knowledge).

This dedicated cohort will leave with a deeper understanding of the needs of forces children that will translate into enhanced support and improved outcomes for the armed forces community.

Additionally, 100% of participants agreed that our team was knowledgeable, informative and approachable, thanks to the efforts and approach of our Learning & Development Worker, Judith Blair.

Judith said:

‘Witnessing the dedication and enthusiasm of this group has been truly inspiring. Their genuine commitment to understanding and supporting armed forces children shone through every discussion and activity.’

The results from this programme show that together we can ensure every armed forces child receives the understanding and support they deserve.
