Looking at forces life through a children’s rights lens

We are delighted to launch our children’s rights report to highlight the unique needs and challenges faced by children from armed forces families through a children’s rights lens.

Titled ‘It’s not just their job, it’s our whole lives’, our report was co-produced with children and young people from armed forces and veteran families across Scotland.

The report amplifies their voice through a series of animations, quotes, and case studies, ensuring their perspectives and needs are at the heart of the report’s message.

Through this innovative approach, children and young people highlight unique challenges faced in areas such as education, mental health, parental separation, and social integration.

Its release comes in the wake of the recent commencement of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024, which legislates the safeguarding of the rights of all children in Scotland.

Meet Maude and friends

Take a journey with Maude and friends to learn more about what it means to be a forces child.

We have worked directly with young people from armed forces families to create composite stories that reflect their collective experiences.

These stories have been brought beautifully to life by Rubie McNeill.

Watch our animation about what it’s like to be in an Army family below.

So, what’s next!?

Having launched our report, we are committed to working with policymakers, educators, and wider professionals to address the gaps identified in the report.

Our report makes a series of recommendations to ensure children’s rights are fully considered, upheld, and protected based on Protection, Provision, and Participation themes.
