The theme of Befriending Week this year is Collaboration and Partnership. Heather Douglas, coordinator for the Ruby Boots Project, discusses the advantages of projects that lean into peer support and community partnerships.
As part of Befriending Week, I’ve been reflecting on Ruby Boots so far, and how deeply the project relies on collaboration and connection. Ruby Boots simply wouldn’t exist without the dedication of young people taking on buddy roles, our incredible adult volunteers, and the support of our external partners.
Our buddies are at the heart of Ruby Boots. They undergo in-depth training and generously give their time to support peers navigating the transition to civvy street. Watching them grow into their roles has been powerful. Many have shared learning reflections such as, “I’m good at helping people feel better,” and “that I’m not alone.” Peer support doesn’t just help the person receiving it — it reduces isolation for the buddy too.

Do you know a veteran’s child who would make a great buddy? We’d love to hear from you.
Our adult volunteers are vital to the success of this programme. They not only provide thoughtful guidance in sessions, helping create meaningful discussions and supportive spaces, but they also regularly go above and beyond to collaborate: developing session plans, strengthening our approach, and helping to shape innovative volunteer processes. Their passion and commitment make them an invaluable part of the Ruby Boots team.
From teachers and school staff to neighbouring organisations and parents: your involvement is what enables us to reach and uplift the young people who need us most. Collaboration with you is the foundation of everything we do.
Ruby Boots has had an incredibly positive year, surpassing expectations and demonstrating the power of peer support. Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue strengthening connections, building confidence, and reducing isolation among children and young people from Armed Forces families.
Here’s to the joy of walking alongside one another, with courage, community, and, of course… a pair of Ruby Boots.
