A new way home

A young person’s guide to the  transition to civilian life

Here’s a supportive workbook for children and young people living anywhere in Scotland. A new way home can be printed at home and completed by any child or young person experiencing this journey.

This pack was co-produced with children and young people involved with Ruby Boots, reflecting their real experiences and showing what helps them cope.

You can view the pack below, and find a version for printing at home.

Are you the parent of an Forces child making this change? Here’s a tool for you to work through together:

How to print A new way home at home

You need: A home printer with double-sided printing enabled, a stapler, and 10 pages of A4 printer paper.

(If your printer only prints single-sided, you’ll need 20 pages, and your pack will have more blank pages for writing and drawing.)

  1. Download the workbook as a PDF using the link below.
  2. Print out the PDF using your computer or mobile device. You’ll need to set the printer settings so the document is printed double-sided, flipped on the short edge.
  3. The pack will have printed with two pages per sheet. Fold the stack of papers in half, along the short edge.
  4. Pages 10-11 will appear on top of the pack. Add staples between these pages, along the crease, to ‘bind’ the book.
  5. Fold the papers in half again, along the crease. Your at-home pack is now ready to use.
