Forces Life Board Game & Comic Book

Updated : August 1, 2022 3 mins read

Want to learn more about life in an armed forces or veteran family?

Co-developed with young people from armed forces and veteran families, the Forces Life board game and comic book aims to help civilian audiences to better understand what it’s like to be a forces child.

These resources will be useful for anyone who may know or work directly with young people from the armed forces community – from teachers and civilian classmates to NHS workers, sports coaches, decision makers and much more.

This free resource is for anyone who wants to know a little more about the positive and challenging aspects of life in armed forces and veteran family to enhance understanding and empathy.

We received funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and ABF: The Soldiers Charity, and worked in partnership with Dekko Comics, Edinburgh Napier University and Connect Communications to make things happen.

A little more about our board game and comic book

The board game is a take on traditional snakes and ladders, and the young people involved in the project have created special gaming cards to share lived experiences and to introduce a fun-based point-scoring system.

Young people have shared their lived experiences further to co-develop five short stories in a comic book that accompanies the board game, which includes topics like parental deployment, postings, relocations, and new schools.

Want to know a little about the making of the board game and comic book?

Forces Children Scotland embeds co-production at the heart of everything it does, which brought a working group of young people together to co-develop the board game and comic book through residential and online activities.

The young people involved are from armed forces and veteran families, who shared their lived experience and explored lots of creative techniques and storytelling to deliver these resources.

Watch our video below to hear more from the group.

What we want to happen next

We want to get these resources into schools, youth work and community settings across Scotland and our young people have called upon politicians to include it as part of compulsory teacher training and cpd activities in the future.
