Create your own wellbeing box

Mental health

Here’s a calming, creative activity for children and young people aged 8-18 years old. This activity was offered as part of the 2025 Ruby Boots summer programme.

A wellbeing box is a special place to keep things that make you feel calm, happy, and supported, especially during hard or stressful times.

What you’ll need

  • A small cardboard box (or any container)
  • Paper, stickers, pens, or craft supplies to decorate the box
  • A notebook or small journal
  • Optional extras (see ideas below!)

 Step-by-step guide

1. Decorate the box

This is your wellbeing box, so design it however you like. To personalise it, you can:

  • Draw your favourite things
  • Add stickers or magazine cut-outs
  • Write positive words or your name
  • Use your favourite colours

2. Add a notebook

If you don’t already have a positivity or gratitude journal, you can take a plain notebook and decorate it to match your style.

You can use this new notebook for:

  • Writing about your feelings
  • Drawing or doodling
  • Making lists of things you’re thankful for
  • Positive affirmations
  • Brainstorming ideas

3. Make a positivity game

If you have a small stacking game (like mini Jenga), you can write words or phrases that make you feel good, such as:

  • “I am brave”
  • “Take a deep breath”
  • “Call a friend”
  • “Go outside”
  • “Listen to music”

As you play the game, you can read the message each time you pick up a piece.

If you can’t get mini Jenga, you can write phrases on slips of paper or revision cards. Choosing one at random will give you words of encouragement.

4. Add reminders of your strengths

Think about:

  • Things you’re proud of
  • Skills you’ve learned
  • Challenges you’ve overcome
  • Kind things people have said about you

Write them down and add them to your box so you can read them when you need a boost.

5. Fill your box with personal comfort items

Add anything that helps you relax or feel happy. For example:

  • Colouring book and pencils
  • A favourite book
  • Fidget toy
  • Tea bags or hot chocolate sachets
  • Small snack (like chocolate)
  • Fluffy socks
  • Photos

Your box can grow over time — keep adding new things!

Tips for success

  • There’s no “perfect” wellbeing box — make it your own
  • Choose items that match your interests and hobbies
  • Take your time and enjoy being creative
  • Use your box whenever you need comfort, calm, or inspiration

You can also make wellbeing boxes together as a group.
