Generous funding from the National Lottery Young Start Community Fund has enabled Forces Children Scotland to support young people from serving, reservist and veteran families across Scotland.
The charity delivered over one-hundred virtual and face-to-face sessions, which enabled young people to participate in projects and activities to have their say on topics which matter most to them.
Participation has also enabled young people to check-in about mental health and wellbeing, to develop new skills, confidence and forge friendships through fun-based creative activities and shared experience.
The voice of young people serves as our most valuable asset
Forces Children Scotland strives to be a strengths-based organisation with a co-production approach underpinning all of our work.
This means we recognise the unique experiences of young people from serving, reservist and veteran families as our most valuable asset and we ensure their voice is at the heart of all our decision-making.
By doing so, we share the balance of decision-making with children and young people in the development of our projects and services.
An example of what’s been achieved | Forces Life Project
Forces Children Scotland worked directly with young people from serving, reservist and veteran families to co-produce a board game and comic book to help civilian audiences better understand the lives they lead.
The project brought young people from across Scotland together, via virtual sessions and a residential at Edinburgh Napier University to co-produce the board game and comic book, which will feature as a training resource for teachers and help civilian peers and wider professionals better understand the lives they lead.
The project received a parliamentary motion of support from Alexander Stewart (MSP), who visited the young people during the residential event which was covered by Forces TV/BFBS Radio. The comic book and board game will be showcased at Forces Children Scotland’s exhibition at the Scottish Parliament in June 2022.
