We are delighted that following significant work with the SCiP Alliance, of which we chair the Scotland Hub, UCAS has today announced good practice briefings for those supporting Armed Forces learners to access Further & Higher Education
The briefings can be found here and have some great initial pointers on how you can reflect on your practice and ensure that it is supportive to Armed Forces learners wherever they may be in their learning journey from pre-application and application right through to how to continue to support an Armed Forces young person while they study.
The briefings highlight excellent research undertaken by the University of Winchester (2016) which shows that the participation rate of Armed Forces learners progressing into Further & Higher Education is estimated to be around 24% compared with a national average of 43%.
Supporting Armed Forces young people to access Further & Higher Education is complex but the briefings show that there is much that can be done that could help to improve participation rates and ensuring that every Armed Forces child has the opportunity to progress onto Further & Higher Education should they wish to.
If you want help or support in how to support learners in Scotland then please contact our Education Programme Manager Moira on firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are a parent of an Armed Forces child, or are an Armed Forces young person you can find out more about our University & Colleges Fund, which supports Armed Forces learners who may otherwise be unable to progress in their studies with living expenses, here.
