Scotland’s Armed Forces Children’s Charity

It’s time for another review of our one of the books from our Education Programme’s Resource Boxes.

This month’s book review by Harry, 9, on Odd Dog Out by Rob Biddulph:

“This book is about lots of dogs which are all the same – they look the same, dress the same and behave the same.  However, there is another dog that stands out!  She looks differently, dresses differently and behaves differently to all the other dogs.  This dog doesn’t feel like she fits in, so she goes away on a big journey to a place called ‘Doggywood’ where everyone looks the same as her.

When she is in ‘Doggywood’ she meets a dog who looks differently to her and the others.  They talk about how it feels to be the odd dog out.  The odd dog in ‘Doggywood’ doesn’t feel sad because he likes to stand out.  This gives her the courage to be herself.  So she returns to her city and the other dogs cheer and shout because they missed her, their odd dog out.  She inspires the dogs to be themselves and so they all begin to dress and behave differently.  The moral of this story is be who you are.

I loved this book because it tells you to be who you are no matter what and I think this is an important message because we’re all different and that’s a good thing. It makes the world a lot more interesting.

This book is fun to read.  It is a rhyming books and has colourful, fun illustrations.

I would recommend this book to my friends but especially to people who think we should all be the same.

This book is inspirational to me and could be to others.  It delivers the message to be who you are no matter where you come from or what you look like.  Be yourself and people will appreciate you for who you are!”
