Family Support | Supporting young carers from serving, reservist and veteran families

Forces children Scotland continues to support serving, reservist and veteran families, thanks to generous funding from the Scottish Veterans Fund.

The funding received enables Forces Children Scotland to support children and young people caring for loved ones or members of their local community across Scotland, through its Family Support Service.

The charity awards grants through its Young Carers Fund, which is one of several funds available to children and young people from serving, reservist and veteran families.

A case study is provided below to highlight the impact of support provided through Forces Children Scotland’s Young Carers Fund (Identities have been protected):

John and his sister support a sibling who has severe autism, who experiences problems communicating effectively and frequent dysregulated behaviour patterns can be disruptive, particularly when it comes to sleeping at night.

Their father serves in the British Armed Forces, who is deployed for long periods of time. As the eldest sibling, John feels he needs to take on the role of ‘man of the house’ which causes him to feel anxious about his mum and siblings.

Forces Children Scotland awarded a grant to John and his sister to purchase a trampoline and computer gaming console to help switch off, relax and provide welcome respite from their caring responsibilities, particularly when dad is deployed.

Funding has also enabled the charity to support young carers take a well-deserved break and build happy memories with family, through its Family Respite Fund.

The Williamson’s received a grant to travel down to Alton Towers for a weekend break. The trip was organised to celebrate Claire’s birthday, who has caring responsibilities for both her parents, one of whom has a spinal/brain injury and the other lives with significant challenges to mental health and wellbeing.

The break provided the family an opportunity to spend the first significant amount of time away from their home for a considerable period. Money is extremely tight and both parents agreed it would not have been possible to build many precious family memories, without the help of Forces Children Scotland.
