Scotland’s Armed Forces Children’s Charity

Forces Children Scotland has received funding to co-produce a ground-breaking creative campaign, called ‘Listen Up!’ with young people from serving, reservist and veteran families across Scotland.

We’re looking for young people aged 13- 19 to volunteer to work with professional specialists to develop ideas and a creative campaign.

We want to help civilian audiences to better understand what it’s like to be a forces child today. Forces children are obviously the experts, so we’re going to work with them directly to co-produce a campaign.

For the young people who get involved, the project will provide a creative opportunity to share their lived experience and co-create a powerful campaign that will help people understand the lives they lead.

We’re working with a fantastic team from a creative agency called Effervescent to put our ground-breaking campaign together, and we want to give you an idea of what we plan to do.

What we’re going to do and where

To begin with, we will work together for seven days during the summer holidays – Monday 18th to Sunday 24th July 2022. You’ll need to be available for the whole week.

We’ll be staying at Edinburgh Napier University for the week. The group will be supervised at all times; we’ll be working together during the day, then in the evenings there will be qualified youth workers on hand to look after everyone.

In total there’ll be about twenty of us in the team, a mixture of young people aged 13-19.  If you’re under 18, we’ll get in touch with your parent/guardian to make sure they have all the details and that we have consent for you to attend.

The sessions will be a mixture of thinking and researching, combined with being quite playful and experimenting with creative ideas together. It’s a group effort where everyone is helped to feel confident and be yourself.

A few weeks later we’ll spend another weekend working on our ideas together. This time though we’ll get together remotely using Zoom. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a computer or very good internet, we can help with that.

After that we’ll stay in touch and develop the campaign together over a few months; you can get involved in whichever parts you’re interested in when you have time.

Want to know about the next steps?

What we would like you to do next is visit our Listen Up! Project landing page on Effervescent’s website, which provides further info and a very cool video to showcase some of the incredible projects they have done.

If you want to get involved in our Listen Up! Project, please submit your application by 9am on Monday 23 May 2022; this is something you can also do through our project landing page.

Forces Children Scotland’s Listen Up! Project is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and ABF: The Soldiers Charity.
